Face it, we have all been lecturing and caught a student looking at a poorly hidden phone in their lap. Or maybe you have been lecturing about a serious subject only to see a student looking at their laptop screen with a big smile on their face (watching a cat video no doubt). While we are hyper sensitive to distracted students, maybe we are not imagining an increase in distractions.
The question is how faculty deal with this increased distraction? Is this a question of increasing vigilance or classroom etiquette? Or is this a challenge to fight the boredom or lack of engagement that tempts students to look at cat videos?
